Week 4

This post is due by the end of the school day on Monday, December 12th.

Quote # 1: "He thought how 'queer' it was, 'egomaniacal.' Imagine going all out to impress a man you were going to kill, a man who wouldn't be alive ten minutes from now--not if the plan he and Dick devised went smoothly" (173).

Quote # 2: "'I wanted to help him. I hoped I might change a few of his ideas. Now I know better. The rights of other people mean nothing to Perry. He has no respect for anyone...' she said. 'But I'm afraid of him. I always have been. He can seem so warmhearted and sympathetic. Gentle. He cries so easaily. Sometimes music sets him off, and when he was a little boy he used to cry because he thought a sunset was beautiful. Or the moon. Oh, he can fool you. He can make you feel so sorry for him--" (181-182).

Quote # 3: "'Myself, I don't want to hear another word,' said Mrs. Hartman. 'I told them, We can't go on like this. Distrusting everybody, scaring each other to death. What I say is, if you want to talk about it stay out of my place'" (191).

Quote # 4: "The sound of Dick's voice was like an injection of some potent narcotic, a drug that, invading his veins, produced a delirium of colliding sensations: tension and relief, fury and affection" (194).

Quote # 5: "Envy was constantly with him; the Enemy was anyone who was someone he wanted to be or who had anything he wanted to have" (200).

  1. Quote # 3:"IT IS NO SHAME TO HAVE A DIRTY FACE--THE SHAME COMES WHEN YOU KEEP IT DIRTY" (140).

I think this quote means that Perry's family wants him to not go down the wrong path. They aren’t telling him what to do though, because they say none of us have anyone to blame for whatever they have done with their personal lives. They want him to stay positive and get back up when he has fallen. Perry does not think that though. He is unmoved from this letter, I think, because they did not respond fast to his letter which made him feel angry. Since they responded while he was imprisoned his surroundings made him feel even worse. His sister is trying very hard to include him though by telling him a lot about his niece and nephews.

  3. Quote # 3: This shows what the clutters tragedy has done to people in the town. This has made a lot of drama and superstitions. People can’t trust themselves and others and are starting to point fingers. Mrs. Hartman is tired of people tearing other people down and all the drama that has been started. She feels that people are scaring one another and it is causing major problems. It is disturbing to a lot of people and it is making people feel the way they first did when this murder first happened things should be getting better but it seems like it is just getting worse. People are scared of there own shadow. So Myrt Clare took a stand and tried to get people to get there minds off of the tragedy. It seemed to work for a second or too until people started pointing fingers again and having allegations about people purse snatching and committing other crimes and therefor pointing the finger at them. People started to stoop so low to point fingers at there once friends. People they knew would never do that but they felt as if they found they killer then the worry would go away they would be free of the awful feelings that they felt.

  4. Qoute #3: Mrs. Hartman works in a store and has people coming in to purchase things but end up stay for a long time talking bad about the Clutters. She doesn’t want to hear them talking bad about them so she wants them to leave if they are going to talk about them. They all agree that it is unnecessary for them to talk bad about the Clutter family. She just thinks they are bad people. When I hear people around me talking bad about someone I am friends with I don’t want to hear it so I tell them if they want to talk bad about a friend they can go somewhere else and talk about them.

  5. Quote # 3: "'Myself, I don't want to hear another word,' said Mrs. Hartman. 'I told them, We can't go on like this. Distrusting everybody, scaring each other to death. What I say is, if you want to talk about it stay out of my place'" (191).

My opinion of this quote is that it is saying that most of the people who were very close to the Clutter family are becoming angry that everyone is blaming everyone else except for a few people. Mrs. Hartman is against everyone ‘pointing fingers’. She is getting very frustrated saying that she wants nothing to with this. She is basically saying that if you are going to blame all these innocent people who did not murder the family to get out of her house. Instead of people trying to forget about the murder they are making it bigger and bigger. Myrt Clare finally got peoples mind off this terrible murder, but only for a little bit. People started to blame criminals who committed other crimes like the purse snatchers.

  6. Quote #1: This quote was describing what Perry was thinking as he and Dick were riding in the car with Mr. Bell. They had been hitch hiking and he had picked them up on his was to Omaha. Dick was entertaining Mr. Bell with jokes and riddles and their laughter was bothering Perry, because he was focused solely on the murder they were about to commit. Capote flashes forward to Perry and Dick murdering Mr. Bell with a belt. They had a detailed plan including a signal phrase (Perry, pass me a light.) and Perry striking Mr. Bell over the head with a rock while Dick took the wheel. Reading this reminded me of the show Criminal Minds. I watch it frequently and the details Capote puts into scenes like this one in the car make me feel as if I am watching the show. He does a great job utilizing ethos by including how Mr. Bell has five kids and is a traveling business man. This reminds me of my own father and makes me hate Perry and Dick for plotting his murder. The way Capote talks about his booming laugh makes me think he is a joyful innocent person and does not deserve what he has coming. He also keeps the readers interest by leaving you hanging at the part where they are about to kill him and he stops for a third hitch hiker. This also reminds me of Criminal Minds because in every episode one victim is spared or saved. Knowing that this really happened is mind blowing to me.

  7. Quote 3: Since Mrs. Hartman does work at a post office and hears about it all the time i understand where she comes from completely. It can be so annoying when something happens at school and for the next two weeks all you do is hear about it. She says "i dont know a soul who still thinks they have got hell's chance of catching the one who done it. So i say the sane thing to do is shut up. You live until you die and it doesnt matter how you go; dead's dead." I really do like this quote because it shows how of a mature person she is. It sounds like she is moving on and she thinks the rest of the town should as well. I still belive that she and the rest of the town are all upset that someone killed the Clutter family but i really feel like she is saying that they are dead now and there is nothing we can really do about it so there is no point in dwelling on the fact that they are dead. I think that grieving is always a good thing to do after somebody dies but i feel like at this point it everyone should just move on because its doing them no good to keep talking about it.

  8. Quote#2: This quote is an interview question asked by Nye and answered by Perry’s sister, named Mrs. Johnson, who hasn’t seen him in four years. Nye travels to San Francisco to dig up more information. Mrs. Johnson hasn’t seen her brother Perry in four years and is obviously scared of him and hesitant to even bring up anything about him from the past. It almost seems like Perry has a mental disorder by the way she describes him. Judging by the quote Perry used to be a gentle kind hearted person. “When he was a little boy he used to cry because he thought a sunset was beautiful.” This shows how sensitive he must’ve been. In my opinion, this is an indirect characterization of Perry being very manipulative. I’ve known someone like that from my personal experience. Sometimes when people are so hostile, it’s easy to trick other into thinking they’re nice when they act so sweet.

Perry was thinking of how odd the idea of impressing the man you are about to kill is. He would have much rather just gotten the dirty deed dealt with, but had to listen to Dick's "conceited chatter." and was hoping that Dick would hurry with the signal. But in the end their plan had failed as when Dick finally gave the signal Perry had been anxious for, it was too late....

  10. Quote # 3: "'Myself, I don't want to hear another word,' said Mrs. Hartman. 'I told them, We can't go on like this. Distrusting everybody, scaring each other to death. What I say is, if you want to talk about it stay out of my place'" It seems as if there is alot of tention because Mr.Clutter had very close people to them that really cared or what not and everyone is trying to blame everyone , but not everyone is getting blamed for. Mrs.Hartman isnt feeling all this blaming pointing fingers at everyone. Mrs.H dont feel like being bothered with this "foolishness". She basically saying they need to just forget about the murdering or what not. They just need to stop bringing it up, and stop trying to blame innocent people. It seems as if it's causing more problems and tention that he's dead and talking about it then it is leaving it alone and just letting the man r.i.p. And leaving the family alone, im pretty sure they already feel sad as well as hurt, they lost a family member. Everyone should just let it be leave the family alone. Let it be. I think that's what Mrs.Hartman is trying to do, but everyone is trying to do their own thing. And their not going to get anywhere with those attitudes..

  11. This quote is from Perry’s sister, Mrs. Johnson. Her quote is obviously expressing how hurt she has been by Perry in the past and how manipulating he can be. She talks about how she is scared of him. But I don’t believe she is actually scared of him, like in a physical way. I can tell this by the harsh letter he wrote to him while he was in prison, expressing how she thinks that he needs to stop blaming the world on him problems and start taking his actions into his own hands. I think that she is scared of him in a way where he can be very manipulative and get what he wants by making people feel sorry for him.

This is saying that people in the town are getting tired of the non-stop rumors and fear of their neighbors. So they stopped talking about it at the post office and her diner. If i was Mrs. Hartman i'd get tired of hearing it as well. They're dead, and its too late to bring them back so you have to move on from it. Everyone is scared of each other as it is, so why make it worse?

  13. "Myself, I don't want to hear another word,' said Mrs. Hartman. 'I told them, We can't go on like this. Distrusting everybody, scaring each other to death. What I say is, if you want to talk about it stay out of my place"

This quote means that Mrs. Hartman is tired of them bring up the death of the man, She just wants him to rest in peace. Like when my grandparents died i try to not bring them up anymore because they were really close to me and it was that i lost them. so if i hear someone talk about them it makes me sad. So maybe Mrs. Hartman gets sad when she hears his name. She just wish that they can just leave him alone beacuse hes dead and you can't bring him back so everyone just needs to leave it alone.

  14. Quote#3....
I understan where Mrs. Hartman is coming from because the KBI is blaming almost everybody for the killing of the Clutter family. The people in the town are really getting tired of all the non-stop rumors. The family is died know the KBI can't bring them back so they just need to come down about it.

  15. Quote # 2: "'I wanted to help him. I hoped I might change a few of his ideas. Now I know better. The rights of other people mean nothing to Perry. He has no respect for anyone...' she said. He can make you feel so sorry for him--" (181-182).

This quote shows how Perry really had some mental problems. Perry has no emotion so he is able to put on any mask he likes to fool people. Serial killers are manipulative because they feel no remorse. And Perry doesn't feel guilty for killing the clutters or anyone else.
