Week 1

Please respond to one of the quotes below by the end of the school week (Friday, November 21, by5:00 PM)

Quotation # 1: “I can’t imagine you afraid. No matter what happened, you’d talk your way out of it” (36).

Quotation # 2: "The compulsively superstitious person is also very often a serious believer in fate; that was the case with Perry. He was here, and embarked on the present errand, not because he wished to be but because fate had arranged the matter; he could prove it-..." (42)

Quotation # 3: “You pursue the negative…You want not to give a damn, to exist without responsibility, without faith or friends or warmth” (44-45).

Quotation # 4: “The mood of a man insuring his life is not unlike that of a man signing his will; thoughts of mortality must occur” (47).

Quotation # 5: "A year ago, when they first encountered each other, he'd thought Perry 'a good guy' if a bit 'stuck on himself,' 'sentimental,' too much 'the dreamer.' He had liked him but not considered him especially worth cultivating until, one day, Perry described a murder, telling how, simply for 'the hell of it,' he had killed a colored man in Las Vegas-beaten him to death with a bicycle chain. The anecdote elevated Dick's opinion of little Perry; he began to see more of him, and like Willie-Jay, though for dissimilar reasons, gradually decided that Perry possessed unusual and valuable qualities...Dick became convinced that Perry was that rarity, 'a natural killer'-absolutely sane, but conscienceless, and capable of dealing, with or without motive, the coldest-blooded deathblows" (55).

This statement by Mrs.Ashida is one of the ways that shows that Mr.Clutter is a good man. Other things that tell me he is a great man is that he takes Mrs.Ashida and her sons home all the time and she claims that he was a gentleman and that he would never take advantage of or break a promise. She also values his opinion greatly by making his opinion her deciding factor on whether or not she would buy her husband gold teeth for Christmas or not. I also think she believes the reason why he is brave and that he can "talk his way out of everything" is because he is able to speak in front of thousands of people so efficiently. That takes courage and a great speaker to be able to do something like that.

  2. Quatation #1: "I can’t imagine you afraid. No matter what happened, you’d talk your way out of it” (36).

This quote is saying that Mr.Clutter is a persuasive man who is a very good speaker. It also suggests he is an acceptable guy who Mrs.Ashida respects. She said he would never "break the squire" and realized one of his qualities of being fearless.

The quote is saying that Dick needed a "cold-blooded killer" not someone who would feel guilt or pitty for the future victim. At first Dick saw perry as a good guy, until Peryy told him of a murder he had comitted. This showed him that Perry could handle killing that family

This quote is the point that I suspected that Perry had some kind of mental disorder. I think Capote does an excellent job of taking the reader inside the mind of a killer. Perry was easy to manipulate because he has a distorted image of reality. Perry had no remorse for the crime he committed, he felt it was his duty to fulfill the Clutter family murders. Dick took advantage of Perry's mental instability. It was interesting to analyze the relationship between the two murderers. This quote was foreshadowing the murders and kept the suspense for the reader. Capote did a good job transitioning between the murderers and the Clutter family during the begininning of the book.

This quote about Mr. Clutter shows that he is a good man. He is a respectful man and does a lot for his family. Mrs. Ashida says that Mr. Clutter is a man that keeps his promise. Also Mr. Clutter had to make the big decision for Christmas if he wanted to get three golden teeth or not, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to use the money on his teeth or more on his family. Mrs. Clutter is a persuasive man who is a very good speaker.

Perry was a true cold blooded killer. He seems to have no emotions. This is shown in the fact that he killed a colored man with no motive. Perry seems to want to be this cold emotionless person. He doesn't want faith of friends or warmth because he simply doesn't want to feel anything. I think he killed the Clutter family because he thought they were weak. He saw all their emotion and the way they happily lived their life and he wanted to get rid of that.

Said by Mrs. Hideo Ashida who is Holcombs wife who gets along with Mr.Clutter and his family fairly well. She obviously respects him enough and trusts him as well to keep his promise. He definitely seems to be very persuasive. She even weighs her desicion of buying gold teeth for her husbnd or not on, based on his good judgment and character.

" I can't imagine you afraid. No matter what happened you'd talk your way out of it"
I agree with Lucy and Kasey but u feel like this quote has a deeper meaning. I feel like mr. Clutter is a great speaker and that he comes off as fearless. He had that strong manly man persona about him that hides his true feelings and he can Cover things up easily by saying I've thing and feeling another. I just truly thu f he is trying to be a good man and be strong for his family but he is a very persuasive speaker and I feel like that us the reason I feel this way.

  10. Quotation #1 , I agree w/ everyone else. He (Mr.Clutter) seems as if he is a very strong great speaker and that he also is a family man and respectful/gentlemen. But he kinda hides his true feelings with i guess you can say his "manly side". Over all he seems as if he is a wonderful person (man)

Quotation # 1: “I can’t imagine you afraid. No matter what happened, you’d talk your way out of it” (36).
I agree with everyone else as well about Mr. Clutter being a great speaker and a strong man. He seems to be a nice man who keeps his promises but hides his feelings in a way where he thinks one thing but feeling another way. He wasn't all about himself because he had to make the decision of buying the teeth or buying for his family. Mr. clutter is persuasive and he can talk his way out of anything because he is a great speaker.
