Week 2

This post is due by 5:00 PM, Monday, November 28.

Quote # 1: "'Everything Herb had, he earned-with the help of God. He was a modest man but a proud man, as he had a right to be. He raised a fine family. He made something of his life.' But that life...how was it possible that such effort, such plain virtue, could overnight be reduced to this-smoke, thinning as it rose and was received by the big, annihilating sky." (79)

Quote # 2: "...Once a thing is set to happen, all you can do is hope it won't. Or will-depending. As long as you live, there's always something waiting, and even if it's bad, and you know it's bad, what can you do? You can't stop living." (92)

Quote # 3: "When Perry said 'I think there must be something wrong with us,' he was making an admission he 'hated to make.' After all, it was 'painful' to imagine that one might be 'not just right'-particularly if whatever was wrong was not your own fault but 'maybe a thing you were born with.'" (110)

In Quote #2: You cant slow yourself down or doubt yourself just because one thing bad happened to change your opinion of what your doing.

In Quote #3: Just because you have something to do that you believe in doesnt mean others have to believe in it.

I agree with Carmen when she said just because you have something to do that you believe in doesnt mean others have to believe in it. Although I think it also means that everyone has ther own ideals and ways to express them. People may not all feel the same way about things but there is always a way to look at it in a different light. Even in the craziest times people admit to ther flauws and try to team together. To make improvements and stand together to help the cause.

  3. In quote #3:
Perry tried to blame himself in the past about what was going on in life. He then finally thought maybe its not him causing the problems its just a coincidence that things are going bad for him. Also if you take things into different perspectives then there will be a difference. People going through tough times always want to blame themselves for everything. They need to take it into a different view and work it out, because not everything comes to you out of the blue. Also when you believe in something doesn’t mean everyone else has to believe in it also.

  4. Quote 1:
I think this quote displays how Mr. Cutter's very close friend feels that he is a very hard working man that once was very poor then became a very successful man. I think this quote is also leaving the reader to think "how could these good people be murdered?" Because of what the reader knows is that this family is a good family and does no harm, so why would someone want harm to be put upon them and it come down to something such as death?

This quote was said by Andy Erhart, one of Mr. Clutter's closest friends. The two studied together in college and Erhart has much admiration for Mr. Clutter. This quote is a perfect example of how much Mr. Clutter was respected amongst the community of Holcomb. Erhart touches on the shock that the small town went through and also on how quickly life can be taken away. This quote makes me think that the motive could be to gain all that Mr. Clutter has "earned- with the help of God" and that Perry and Dick could have been searching for money. There are also other references of the Clutter family's money throughout the book, like the trees lining the long driveway and the size of the house (3 stories including the basement) all of this makes me believe the motive was money. However, it doesn't make since that Perry and Dick didn't take anything from the house and have no way of receiving any financial benefits from there death. I am intruiged as to what the motive would be and I am anxious for the murderers to be caught. It is annoying to listen to their diner conversations about the murders knowing they are getting away with it.

  6. Quote 2: I agree with carmen that you cant slow yourself down just because something unfortunate is happening. Surprisingly i think coming from Perry it is actually pretty accurate and wise. I mean nobody can just stop living their life because of one situation. Many people have to continue living through hard situations just like how Bobby had to move on when his girlfiend died. The world keeps going no matter who you are and what you have experienced. I do agree with this statement but I dont think that it gives you the right to kill someone just because it "is set to happen".

i think this quote is about one of Mr clutter best friend and showing how much he cares him. also anything is possible with god. i agree with Lucy saying "it leaves the reader to think how could these good people be murdered?" because, good people are not always the bad people, and why would you want to be brother if your not the bad person. If i was a good person i would want to be left along and not want death towards to me.

I like this point of view; a it's saying whatever is destined to happen, it will; so you have to live with it. Perry was talking in the context of his dream, where he knew the snake would attack him, but he had to do what caused it. Events are set up based on what we decide, and we have to live with the consequences... or rewards - depending.

  9. Quote 1: In this quote, Andy Erhart is watching the items from the horrible murder burning and reflecting on what a good man Mr. Clutter was. It seems like Erhart is surprised that such a horrible thing happened to such a dear friend of his. Basically, the honest and righteous life he was living mounted to nothing. In my mind I compare the smoke rising up in the air from the fire, to Mr. Clutter’s life, just evaporating. That’s the metaphor that I receive in my mind of what Mr. Erhart’s thoughts on this. I suspect that whoever participated in the murder was very jealous of Mr. Clutter and the life he had. Maybe because they felt like it was all God’s doing, or they were just filled with envy from his hardwork.

  10. Quote 1: About this quote here, it seems as if something has happend that is tragic to someone that was specialo to someone else. (Erhart) Also it seemes as if who ever helped with the killing of Mr.Clutter was a HATER of that man's life and wanted what he had. They saw they couldnt get it, so they took him out. R.I.P. Mr.Clutter.

I think Herb was a hard working man. He had nothing but what he did have he made something out of it, choosing to struggle against what would seem to be his outcome. Perry started out with nothing as well, but he never strove to make anything out of it. Perry accepted what he thought would be his destiny and never questioned that, even though, through endurance and perseverance, he could change his life for the better.

Peryy is talking about his dream, he knew what was going to happen when he went to grab the diamond a snake would fall down but he did it anyways. This is saying that all events have a consequence whether it be good or bad

I agree with jake on this quote. Perry does not believe that he can do anything about this situation to stop it from happening so he has to just keep living his life and not stop because of this.

  14. Quote #2....Perry does not believe that he can't make it through this situation and just wants to give up. Just because somthing does not go right he can't just quite and do nothing life is still going so Perry has to try his best and make it through his problem and not hide from it.

This quote shows what a truly good man Herb Clutter was. He started out with little money and he grew up to be a success. Everyone in town admired him for his hard work. Part of why no one believed the murder was because holcomb was such a peaceful town but I think another part was that no one could see why such good people had their lives taken from them.
