Week 3

This week's post will be due at the end of the school day on Monday, December 5th.

Quote # 1:"'When I was a girl', she had once told a friend, 'I was pretty sure trees and flowers were the same as birds or people. That they thought things, and talked among themselves. And we could hear them if we really tried. It was just a matter of emptying your head of all other sounds. Being very quiet and listening very hard. Sometimes I still believe that. But one can never get quiet enough'" (122).

Quote # 2:"I truthfully feel none of us have anyone to blame for whatever we have done with our own personal lives. It has been proven that at the age of 7 most of us have reached the age of reason-which means we do, at this age, understand & know the difference between right and wrong. Of course--environment plays an awfully important part in our lives..." (139)

Quote # 3:"IT IS NO SHAME TO HAVE A DIRTY FACE--THE SHAME COMES WHEN YOU KEEP IT DIRTY" (140).

Quote # 4:"'It is almost impossible for a man who enjoys freedom with all of its prerogatives, to realize what it means to be deprived of that freedom'--Said by Earle Stanley Gardner" (147).

Quote # 5:"The real thing is I've come to feel I know Herb and the family better than they ever knew themselves. I'm haunted by them. I guess I always will be. Until I know what happened" (148)

  1. Quote 1:
As we have previously read, Nancy is a very down to earth girl. We know this by the way she has her own horse and enjoys her time with this horse very much. We also know that she is down to earth because she is very liked by the entire community and usually people are not liked if they are are high maintenance and snobby. I think this quote has a deeper meaning behind it though. I feel like when I read this quote that it could relate back to the murder. Like Dewey told his team, “we have to keep going until we know the Clutters better than they ever knew themselves.” This would meant that they would have to spend a lot of time on focusing on details and seeking for hidden clues that they have yet to discover. It is almost as if she is saying that one must clear their head if they want to figure something out, but there is so much commotion going on within the town that it seems impossible to do.

  2. Maddie bridges Quote # 3:"IT IS NO SHAME TO HAVE A DIRTY FACE--THE SHAME COMES WHEN YOU KEEP IT DIRTY" (140).
This quote is in a letter to perry from Babara, his sister. In the letter she begins talking about flaws, saying everybody has them. While shes not quite sure of Perry's she informs hime it is no shame to have a dirty face--the shame comes when you keep it dirty, i think shes trying to say there isnt any shame in making mistakes. the shame comes when you refuse to make it better

  3. Nancy is a very great women and just a calm person. Everyone in the community likes her because she is so calm and isn’t a stuck up snobby person. I feel like this quote can have multiple meanings if you just read you can think of the quick meaning or you can dig down and get a more intense out of the box meaning. Like she is focusing on details and look for things that aren’t just written that are built into the quote. Also she just looks out her window and just uses personification looking deep outside her window. She just has a wide imagination about what goes on in her society.

  4. Quote # 2: This quote is from a letter that Perry Edward Smith’s family wrote to him while he was in jail. It’s saying that he should take responsibility for his own actions, and not blame other people for them in a loving way. For example, accepting the consequences for why he was put in jail. Depending on environmental situations, like where you live for example or what kind of life that you have on home; it can largely influence the type of person you are, not to say that it’s an excuse to commit any crime. On the end of this quote in the book it also mentions “It is no shame to have a dirty face the shame comes when you keep it dirty.” This is great advice for Perry, telling him that life will knock you down and we’re all human. But it’s not okay if you let it keep you down and not do anything about it.

  5. The head detective, Dewey, said this while replying to a question his good friend asked him. His friend asked, "Do you know what's happening to you Al? Do you realize you never talk about anything else?" This quote highlights Dewey's obsession with the Clutter family case. The murders were so random and surprised everyone. In the 1950s and 60s things like that just didn't happen. At this point in the investigation Dewey is worrying that this will stay and open case file and eventually turn cold which will haunt him the rest of his life. It was frustrating reading this because it creates almost a dramatic irony because we as readers know who the murders are because they are introduced in the beginning but the detectives don't know.

  6. Quote 2: I really like this quote and I think that a couple people in my life particularly could use some wisdom like this. I think that this had to be very hard for Perry to read but at the same time he needs tp realize that what he does is his resposibility and there are consequences. The only thing about this quote that I do not agree with is that none of us have anyone to blame for what we have done. While I do believe that, I think that parents and other individuals that have such a large effect on our lives really do affect our actions. While in the end it our responsibility and there is no one else to blame, people do effect our actions. I think because Perry didnt have such a great life because his mom and dad were in the rodeo it affected his life and is the reason why he only has one sibling of three left.

  7. Quote # 3:"IT IS NO SHAME TO HAVE A DIRTY FACE--THE SHAME COMES WHEN YOU KEEP IT DIRTY" (140).

A Letter sent to Perry while he was in jail from his sister Barbara. Just before the above quote she talks of our human weaknesses and comments to Perry about having a dirty face, (The Quote.) I interpret the quote as meaning that it's not shameful to do something bad, unless you do nothing to make yourself avoid doing it again, or do not try to make it better.

I'm probably not saying as much as I could, but I'm in a bit of a rush today; Sorry! ^_^"

  8. This shows that things are simpler than they appear in life people complicate things and make things to difficult. People that live more earthy and simple like Nancy see things such as this. I feel that Nancy understands that things don't have to be very expensive and high class to make you happy and content. For example she finds joy spending time and caring for her horse, babe. She loves the 4-H activities and is very involved. Everyone seems to like here a lot so we know she must be nice. I feel like she would be a really hard person to treat bad. I think even if you where trying to hurt or be mean to her she would still be nice and try and make things right. For a 16 year old girl I think that she is really smart I feel like she can out wit the quotes actual words. I feel like she has her own meaning of it that she look farther into things than most people would.
She is a writer and a start student she takes things to heart and decode hem to personal meanings.

I defiantely agree with this quote because you are who you want yourself to be. Peoples actions can affect your decisons on things but you cannot blame them for it. Just because you grow up in a bad lifestyle doesn't mean you should do it to. For example, if your parents steal and get a way from it doesn't mean you should do it too, because its wrong. You know right from wrong so either you do it or you don't. Perry needs to realize that he does not need to blame other people for his actions but he needs to take responsibilty for his own actions.

I agree with taylor, i think its wrong for someone to blame someone for something they didn't do. I have been in the same situation with mt friend and her balmeing be for stealing something when it was really her and i got in as much trouble. so i look at this quote as you need to choose your friends wisly, and watch who your with at all times. Perry needs to stand up and be the right person and say that he did thats what a best friend would do.

When investigating the case Dewey got so wrapped up in it. The Clutters were good people and their murders were such a mystery because holcomb was so peaceful and everyone liked them. Dewey had to know what happened to them so he could put the case to rest and give the town at least a little peace of mind.
